10 cops booked in Gujarat
Ten policemen belonging to the Kawant police station in Vadodara, have been booked on charges of having beaten to death a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan who was in custody over his scuffle with an assistant sub inspector.
TEN POLICEMEN belonging to the Kawant police station, have been booked on charges of having beaten to death a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, who was in custody over his scuffle with an assistant sub inspector, suspecting him of aiding the elopement of his adult daughter in Gujarat’s Vadodara district.

Following the BSF trooper’s death, tension has erupted in this tribal town. Police lobbed tear gas shells on angry tribal villagers who attacked the police station in protest against death of the jawan. Noora Rathwa, who was on leave, had attacked ASI Jandu Dadiya with a pick axe following which he was arrested from his village.

The  Vadodara district SP, BS Jebaliya, reportedly has said the incident had its origin in the elopement of the BSF jawan’s daughter four months back. Following the daughter’s elopement with a boy, the BSF jawan had filed a complaint of kidnapping. But since the daughter is more than 18 years old, the court allowed her to go with her husband. Rathwa was angry that the police did not hand over the daughter to him and instead presented the couple in court which let them off. He attacked the ASI of the Kawant police station on Friday following which Rathwa was arrested; it is alleged that he died after police beatings.

The district SP said that the situation in Kawant is under control and State Reserve Police (SRP) teams have been deployed in the area. The injured ASI has been admitted to the SSG Hospital in a serious condition. BSF jawan Noor Rathwa’s body has also been taken to the SSG Hospital for a post-mortem which would be video-recorded to rule out any controversy.
