13-year-old Yugratna addresses UN General Assembly
The only child of AK Srivastava and Roshani, Yugratna is the first girl from India, and second in the world after Severine Suzuki in 1992, to address the august gathering on behalf of the youth worldwide.

A TEENAGE girl from Lucknow, UP, created history as she became the first Indian child to address UN General Assembly in the annals of United Nations.

Yugratna, the 13-year-old daughter of a teacher received an invitation from none other than United Nation’s General Secretary Ban Ki Moon inviting her to address an August gallery of head of States on Climate change and environmental challenges. She represented three billion children and youth in the UN General Assembly on September 22, and presented her lecture on global warming.  During her visit to UN she had the honour of meeting world leaders like US President Barack Obama and Chinese president Hu Jintao.

Speaking forcefully at the podium, she said that three billion young people in the world need the leaders to act now to protect the planet for future generations.

Yugratna was inspired to work towards environmental issues when she was introduced to NGO Tarumtira (Friends of Trees) in standard VI, since then she has been regularly participating in campaigns, seminars and lectures aimed to spread the message of environment protection and global warming.

In the year 2008, the 13-year-old school going Yugratna was invited to participate in the TUNZA youth conference organised in Norway under the banner of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She is also the member of Tunza-a youth magazine for youth.
