AT LEAST 15 people were killed and dozens injured in a stampede inside a tunnel where people gathered to listen to some techno music during Love Parade festival in western Germany on Saturday.

Many revellers unknown of the deadly event kept on partying at the event in Duisburg, near Duesseldorf, when police tried many of them to enter the already jammed parade grounds.

The police are still trying to know what went wrong and how the stampede started and people were crushed to death.

A young man who was present at the site told, "It got tighter and tighter from minute to minute and at some point everyone just wanted out, and they only saw the two exits to the right and left…". He further added, "The pressure from behind become so high that ...we couldn't do anything any more. People were just pushed together until they fell over."

Police commissioner Juergen Kieskemper said that just before the stampede occurred at about 5 p.m. (1500 GMT, 11 a.m. EDT), police had closed that area as it was already overcrowded. The police announced on loudspeakers that revellers should walk off to other directions as the stampede broke off.

Emergency workers really had a tough time getting the bodies out and rescue people out of the tunnel. A young man said that he was trapped but luckily someone pulled him out.

"Both my legs were trapped — then, thank God, somebody helped me up, then I helped another up ... and then, kind of by luck, we were pushed back out of the crowd," he said.

This is one of the worst disasters of its kind in Germany in recent history. The injured people have been immediately transferred to nearest hospitals for treatment.
