SEVENTEEN STUDENTS of a boarding school at Shirgaon in Pune district have tested positive for swine flu on Wednesday (September 9), as per health officials. Five of these students are currently being treated across hospitals in the district while the others have been discharged.
The infected students were housed in the hostel of the KK Birla school, a hostel with a strength of about 500 students. Only 17 have tested positive yet, although a close eye shall be kept on all others that were residing in the same premises.
Most students have been taken home by their guardians in the wake of the infection that caught the school unaware. The students however shall be checked by the authorities for any other suspected cases so that timely treatment could commence on the individual. Schools in the district had just recently reopened after a swine flu break. However, this fresh incident may make parents wary about sending their loved ones to school again.
Meanwhile, health officials added that eight fresh cases of swine flu were reported on Tuesday (September 8). Pune has been the worst hit across the nation with the H1N1 virus. So far the city has accounted for 35 casualties due to the H1N1 virus and the number might still increase substantially.
