18 cows die in Chhattisgarh shelter of suffocation
In Chhattisgarh's Balodabazar district, at least 18 cows died due to gross negligence at a cow shelter which is run by the village panchayat, a senior official said. The incident is of Rohasi' village.

Balodabazar collector Janak Prasad Pathak told PTI that carcasses of 18 cows were recovered from the village on August 3.

Pathak said, "Preliminary investigation revealed that the cows were locked in a room for the past few days and they died of suffocation."

The cows were locked as the villagers were worried about the stray animals damaging the crops. After a discussion between the villagers the cows and buffaloes were captured by locals and locked in a room at a 'kanji house' (cow shelter).

After no one came to claim the cattle, the villagers released most of the cattle that were tied in the open area of the shelter. However, they forgot about the cows that had been locked inside a room.

Pathak said that it was on August 3 that dead cows were discovered by the villagers after foul smell started emanating from the room.

On being informed, local officials reached the spot when the villagers were taking the carcasses for burial. An autopsy was carried out before burying the carcasses.
