19-year-old woman dies after failed abortion
Police have booked a case against a doctor and an alleged lover of a woman after she died while undergoing abortion on Sunday.

The 19-year-old pregnant woman who was five months pregnant was admitted to a private hospital and was scheduled for an abortion. But she developed complications after an abortion was attempted with a pill.

The deceased has been identified as Malluri Harika and was studying engineering at a private college in Hyderabad and was in a relationship with a distant relative S Madhu.

As per reports, the woman started bleeding uncontrollably after the doctors aborted the five month old foetus. And as a result, the woman became unconscious. Keeping in mind her worsening condition, the doctors at the hospital where the abortion was performed suggested that she be taken to Osmania Hospital for further medication. But Madhu, the lover accused in the case, instead took her to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Given that the woman was more than 20 weeks pregnant, the abortion was an illegal one. As per rules laid out by the Indian government, abortion can be performed on a consenting adult woman only as long as the foetus is not more than 12 weeks old. Also, the abortion can be carried out only at a government hospital.

Based on a complaint by the girl's father, the police have registered a case against the accused lover under sections 417, 312 and 314. The accused, after receiving the confirmed medical reports, could also be booked under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.

This could also be a case of botched up abortion, a failed abortion procedure in which the mother carrying the foetus could also lose her life, like it happened in this case.

India has been witnessing an increase in the number of illegal abortion clinics given the tough abortion laws in the country and the failure of the government in implementing them.
