FORD MOTOR Co. is making changes to its next generation version of the Ford Explorer SUV. The brand new Ford Explorer will remain its capability to cover what most of the buyers imagine when they think of going off-road. Between 1995 and 2002, the Explorer was the most popular vehicle of any kind in America, selling 412, 00 of them a year.
The new Ford Explorer will be different in a lot of ways. The new Ford Explorer will have a four-cylinder engine option for the first time. The 2011 Ford Explorer will have turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 engines with efficiency-enhancing direct fuel injection. The concept points the way by running a 2.0-liter turbo-four claiming 275 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. That compares with 210 horses and 254 pound-feet for today’s non-turbo 4.0-liter Explorer V6, and should be more than adequate for curb weight that will still well exceed two tons.
