Twenty two people were killed and more than 30 others were injured in a stampede in Haridwar on Tuesday morning. When the stampede took place more than five lakh people have gathered for the religious celebrations.
AT LEAST twenty two people were killed and more than 30 others were injured in a stampede in Haridwar, a holy place in Uttarakhand on Tuesday. The stampede took place when a large number of people tried to enter the gate of Shantikunj Ashram in the town to take part in a yagya as part of the celebrations.

According to reports, more than five lakh people had gathered for the centenary celebrations of religious Guru Pandit Sriram Sharma at the Gayatri Mahakumbh in Shanti Kunj when the stampede took place. The celebration started on November 6 and will continue till November 11.
The SDM of Haridwar confirmed that 16 people have lost their lives, while some other are said to be injured. According to the report, out of twenty two people who lost their life, mostly are women and children. Senior police and administrative have rushed to the spot and the rescue operation has been launched. The injured have been rushed to the nearby hospitals.
According to the PTI report, when the stampede broke out Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal was also holding yajna at the ashram.
Meanwhile, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressed her condolence to the victim families and urged authorities to act immediately to provide relief to the injured.
