24 Hyderabad students swept away in Himachal's river Beas; 5 bodies recovered
In a tragic accident 24 students of a Hyderabad-based engineering college drowned in river Beas near Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. The incident happened on yesterday evening around 6 p.m. -7 p.m. when all of a sudden gates of the reservoir of 126 MW Larji Hydel Power Project were opened.
According to the latest reports coming in, so far bodies of five students have been recovered. HRD minister Smrti Irani has left for the spot where the accident took place. It is expected that the remaining 19 students were washed away in the strong currents of the river. There were 18 boys and six girls in the total 24 student who were swept away in the river.

More than 60 students and faculty members from VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology were on an excursion to the picturesque tourist resort of Manali and were clicking the natural scenery on the banks of river in Thalaut area near the Hanogi Mata temple. The victims were traveling in two buses. A search operation is still going to track the students.

Chief minister Virbhadra Singh has ordered a probe and ordered the suspension of erring resident engineer of the hydro power project being run by the state electricity board. A case of negligence has been registered as reported by Hindustan Times.

The localities of Thalaut blocked the surrounding area of national highway in order to show their wrath against such negligence of authority and accusing the Hydro Power Project of releasing the water without any warning warning.
