26-year-old Indian student Mubeen Ahmed shot at in California
Mubeen Ahmed, a 26-year-old student from south India's Telangana state was shot at in California. He is currently admitted in a hospital and his condition is stated to be critical.

Mubeen who had gone to the US for pursuing his Masters course (MS) from California University, was fired at in a shop where he had taken up a part-time job in addition to pursuing his studies.

Mubeen's father said that they received a call from the hospital where he was being treated and that his condition was critical. He was in an unconscious state of mind hence they couldn't speak to him on phone. This incident took place on June 4 around 6 pm and the family got to know about it a day after from the hospital.

His father, Mujib Ahmed, told Times of India, "The hospital authorities have called me and said my son is in ICU and in critical condition. We require a visa to be with him." Their family belongs to the Sangareddy district of Telangana and the father works for a defence establishment.

The family has been trying to contact some higher officials in order to get the visa as fast as possible and Mujib Ahmed, the father of the victim, said that they had met the Irrigation Minister and other public representatives who were very helpful.

Although, it is in no means clear as to what triggered this incident and who and why shot him, but the investigation is underway.

Many such incidents have taken place in the past against Indians. Earlier in May, an Indian-American doctor Ramesh Kumar was found dead in a car in Michigan, United States. Also, a 32- year-old guy was shot dead in the passenger seat of a car parked near Detroit. These might not be hate crime incidents but a number of incidents of racial discrimination have been reported against Indians in the United States.
