3 rapes and murder within 48 hours in Uttar Pradesh
Mayawati Government should take heed as three rape cases and murders have been reported in UP in the last 48 hours. Although she is defending herself by saying that this is the work of the Opposition a thought must be spared for the victim.

PEOPLE OF Uttar Pradesh would have thought that a woman Chief Minister would make a difference, at least where atrocities against women are concerned. However, reality is far from that as more and more women, minor and girls are being raped in the state. To add to the long list, recently a 35- year-old lady was brutally raped by 5 people and then burnt to death. This comes after a number of rape cases. This is the third rape case in UP within 48 hours.

The 35-year-old lady called Anarkali was alone in the house when late at night these people entered and raped her, reported her family. Her husband works in Delhi and was not at home. An FIR has been lodged with the UP police. In the same day a Dalit girl paid the sum of her eyes when she resisted two youths from raping her. She was stabbed in her left eye after she refused to succumb to the youth’s wants. Her right eye was also harmed in the process.

This girl was just 14 years of age and was heading towards Gadwa Buzurg village in Gursahaiganj area in Kannauj last evening for some work when Kuldeep (18) and Niranjan Yadav (17) attempted to rape her. Niranjan Yadav was nabbed while Kuldeep is still on the run.

In the same day another 18 year old was sexually assaulted at gunpoint in the Mayawati government. She was raped by a youth in the Ranipur Beladi village in Basti. The youth who is identified as Satti Singh, reportedly raped the girl at gunpoint on Saturday evening. A manhunt is going on for the accused who is absconding.

The Mayawati government is facing a lot of criticism on the growing crimes against women these days but still nothing concrete is being done. The Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which a 14 year old girl was raped and hanged became an eye sore for the ruling government in UP and the Congress left no stone unturned to accuse her. In a statement, Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said, “Mayawati should be ashamed. People expected more from a woman chief minister but she doesn't have a word of sympathy. She tries to shelter the police. The criminals and the police are all hand in glove.”

In her defence Mayawati clearly said that this is the work of the Opposition party but that she would not succumb to any pressure. She also said, “The opposition parties want to corner me and my party. But I want tell that I am not going to accept defeat due to opposition's tricks. Because, unlike other leaders I have not come to politics through dynasty. I have worked on the ground and suffered. I know how to fight in tough times.”

Leaving aside the mind games of politics the government and the Opposition should understand that we are talking about real people and their loss here. Instead of making this an agenda to fight over, everyone should get together in order to make UP and India a safer place for women.
