According to the locals the rescue operations began at least three hours after the incident, which led to more number of deaths. Vikram Katoch told NNIS: “35 died and till now we have recovered 25. We have taken out two women, one of them was alive along with a kid and the conductor of the bus is also alive.”

The survivors said that the 42-seater bus that was taking passengers from Palampur to Ashapuri (a village known for a hilltop shrine) was over-crowded. SH Bharti, DC said, “Both police and Army have been activated and the injured have been taken out and shifted to the Palampur civil hospitals. There are more than 20 casualties but until we recover all the bodies we cannot say the exact numbers. Several bodies have not been recovered so far and the cause of the accident is yet to be known.
