According to the US Geological Survey earthquake in DC area hit around 5 am Eastern Time. The area had last witnessed earthquake of 2.0 in 2008. The region also had a 2.7 quake in 1993.
A geophysicist with the USGS, Amy Vaughan, called it to be “significant event” for the area. According to the media reports, more than 5,000 residents of neighboring states have also reported the jolts of earthquake an hour after the first jolt was felt in Maryland.
The earthquake was literally centered around just a short distance off the 270 highway at the Germantown exit of Middlebrook Road. The U.S. Geological Survey said there are no reports of any damage, injuries so far. No traffic or transit delays were reported by local agencies. The U.S. Geological Survey received 6,500 reports about this earthquake near Gaithersburg, Maryland.
According to an eye witness, he felt his bed was shaking and a glass of water fell down, he shouted for the help. A young resident described the tremors to be a “loud plane flying really low”. A 58-year-old lady said that the earthquake was really loud, all my neighbors were awake from the fear of the earthquake.
