Thirty-seven passengers reportedly died after a Mumbai bound private luxury bus that was coming from Goa fell into Jabgudi river after skidding off the bridge in Ratnagiri district. At least 15 passengers have sustained injuries in this accident.
According to police officials, the accident occurred in the wee hours near Khed when the driver was negotiating a steep turn and lost control over the vehicle, which fell off the Jagbudi bridge from a height of about 40 ft.
So far 37 bodies from the badly damaged bus have been extracted and kept at the Khed municipal hospital. Those who got injured have also been admitted in the same hospital. Police is trying to identify the dead bodies. Rescue operations are still on and the bus is being retrieved from the almost dried up river.
According to media reports there were some foreigners also on the bus and a Russian passenger has been rescued from the debris. Driver of the bus is among the injured and police is investigating whether he was drunk.
