40 Indian workers abducted in violence-hit Mosul in Iraq
A group of Indians, around 40, working with a construction project near the Iraqi city of Mosul are now uncontactable and are said to have been abducted. According to Indian government there are about 120 Indians who are trapped in Iraqi cities amid the escalating fight between Sunni jihadists Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The Indian mission in Baghdad is trying to evacuate its nationals trapped in areas that have fallen to Sunni militants. The Indian government has also decided to send former envoy to Iraq Suresh Reddy to strengthen the Indian Mission in Baghdad.

The external affairs minister, Sushma Swaraj is monitoring and reviewing the issue and has announced to set up a 24-hour control room to provide information to all concerned. The Indian embassy in Baghdad has also set up a 24-hour helpline. The Indian government has also called in the Iraqi envoy to India to discuss the ways of helping Indian nationals trapped in the affected areas of Mosul and Tikrit and also held a crisis management meeting.

Its being reported that the areas that have been taken over by the Sunni militants do not have a large Indian populace. Most of the Indians in Iraq are in Basra and Kurdistan, which are relatively safer places.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the state government is regularly in touch with the central government on what could be done to alleviate the nurses’ difficulties and ultimately evacuate them.

The Indian foreign ministry said the situation in Iraq was receiving 'high priority' but ruled out any immediate emergency evacuation of its nationals, as reported by Sahara Samay.

The external affairs ministry's control room number to get any info on Indians in Iraq are:
