40 years of Emergency: In one voice politicos say 'We must protect our democracy with all our might'
On June 25 it was 40th anniversary of 'Emergency' imposed in the country by former PM late Indira Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets criticised the Emergency period calling it one of the darkest periods the country had to witness.
During the 21-months of the Emergency period from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977, Indira Gandhi invoked Article 352 of the Indian Constitution to grant herself extraordinary powers and launched a massive crackdown on civil liberties and political rivals.

Reacting to the period of Emergency that was imposed in the country 40 years back let's see what the politicos are saying today.

Mohammed Salim, Spokesperson of CPI(M) said, "See in our generation being a high school student, I had just joined politics because of Emergency. My generation would not have joined politics, had there been no emergency. After that experience, and see how the entire country grew as one against the authoritarianism of the Congress government in the situation of Emergency. Not only the opponents but those who were within the Congress and who tried to raise voice against the emergency, they were all silenced. The people had taught a lesson, so in future I think any key person or any party can't do such things with Parliamentary democracy or Parliamentary policy. If at all someone tries to think off, people will not allow them. And now we see another tendency of shift in Indian politics and economy has given rise to doubt that the total concentration of power is in single hand. That is creating an atmosphere that the shadow of Emergency is seen."

Renuka Chaudhary, Congress leader said, "It is an incident which remind us the price of mind and liberty. The generations after that are born with out fear. It was a chapter in the history of democracy and it happened. Now this is it."

Sudhanshu Mittal, BJP leader said, "Well this day should reminds us that in the past, the nation has undergone the blackest hour or the blackest period for democracy. And that experience should not be forgotten and we must protect our democracy with all our might. Never again should civil liberties be suspended, never again a government should hold this government to ransom. So our call today is to save democracy."
