Safe school campaign was held by ISRD-Childline here at Berhampur in Orissa on November 29, where it came to fore that 62 per cent children face corporal punishment in government run schools.
IT IS a major cause of concern that more than 62 per cent of school children are facing physical abuse including corporal punishment which came to the fore at a ‘safe school campaign’ at Berhampur in Orissa.
ISRD-Childline had organised safe and child friendly school campaign through a discourse on ‘evolving a child friendly school’ here in the city on Monday (November 29).
Director Sudhir Sabat of Berhampur unit along with members and teaching staffs and students had participated in the discourse. The programme was organised with a view to generate awareness among stack holders on the subject as children face physical abuse including corporal punishment in the schools.
Besides, children are also abused sexually, mentally and emotionally in schools which hamper their growth and development, adding to it, inadequate infrastructure, discrimination, crime, violence and disorder in schools.
Children particularly the girls had expressed their views on the subject as what kind of surrounding they wanted to get in the schools.
As per a national level study by the Women and Child Development programme, it is found that 69 per cent of the children face physical abuse including ‘corporal punishment’ and in government and municipal schools, it is 62 per cent that becomes a major concern. Above 53 per cent of the school children are forced one or more occasions for sexual abuse and reports suggest 21 per cent severe form of sexual abuse in schools.
