On the 64th independence day celebrations it's time that we do a quick introspection about what we have done and what we aspire to be in the forthcoming years.
CONGRATULATIONS ON our motherland’s 65th Independence Day anniversary. It was the day in 1947 when thousands of our freedom fighters’ relentless struggle and sacrifices under the non-violence leadership of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders of the freedom movement paid its value and India started to inhale in open air without any fear of British’s whipping.
The firm will and not-to-budge determination to get the country free from the clutches of the powerful English rulers led the brave countrymen to fight the independence war unless they accomplished the mission. Today we are independent, and the largest democracy in the world only due to the sacrifices of our patriots who had put all the things they had for the independence of the motherland. We pay homage to them.
But now after 64 years of independence, the current developments and the precarious situation in the country are fiercely pushing us to put ourselves in an introspection status. Had our freedom fighters ever thought that the beloved country will move downward and it will become a country of scams?
Today, where in one hand being the leader of developing countries, we are preparing to give tough competition to the developed nations, our country is also earning bad name, on the other, as it has become the country of prevalent corruption. There is no any government department which is free from the menace; whether it is administrative department, executive department, sports and even the defence department.
You will find the high-to-bottom cadre of officials indulged in the prevailing scourge which is driving the country towards irrecoverable retardation day by day. 2G Spectrum Scam, Commonwealth Games Scam, Telgi Scam, Satyam Scam, Bofors Scam, The Fodder Scam, The Hawala Scandal, IPL Scam, Harshad Mehta & Ketan Parekh Stock Market Scam, and Adarsh Society scam are to name a few. These scams have made the country in losing lakhs of crores of rupees.
Even addressing the Nation on the eve of the Independence Day, President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil expressed her anguish on the menace of the corruption. She said that corruption is affecting India’s political, economic, cultural and social life. She called for a transparent and accountable system to curb the scourge in a sustainable manner. She termed it as cancer and emphasized the need of coming together of government, Parliament, Judiciary and society to eliminate it. The President also underlined the need for the effective enforcement of punitive action to deal with the menace.
This is the very cause which forced the civil society under the leadership of Gandhian Anna Hazare to launch agitation for enacting Lokpal which will look into the corruption cases.
Addressing the nation, President Patil also insisted on effective measures for the eradication of poverty. She highlighted the role of the government and voluntary agencies engaged in the task of eradicating poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy. Patil further said government efforts need to be supported by voluntary agencies, NGOs and citizens themselves who can be development partners of the government.
Addressing the countrymen, President Patil recalled the words of Swami Vivekanand, “This national ship of ours my countrymen, has been plying for ages, carrying civilization and enriching the whole world with its inestimable treasures.”
She said, “The challenge for us, is how effectively we carry forward the nation from now onwards.
Let history be the judge that during our time, we found the right answers to the challenges we faced, and acquitted ourselves with dignity and continued to work with unity, to build the India of our dreams. Whatever task you are doing in the interest of the country is important, and I call on all citizens to pledge, that they will work with full commitment and dedication, honesty and integrity and with a sense of pride. If we do this, there is much that we will be able to achieve as a nation.”
As the country is busy in celebrations of the national festival, the government, its opposition, the executive group, the administration and all including the common citizens should pledge to work only in the interest of the nation.
If we perform our duties honestly and sincerely, there is no any obstacle which can check our progress to become a peaceful, happy and prosperous country.
