The world’s oldest divorce would be how it would be remembered for most of the people in Italy but for the unfortunate wife it would stay in her memory as the fateful day when her husband of 77 years found the letter that she had written during 1940’s to her lover. Antonio C. was so upset by his find just two days before Christmas, that he confronted her and got the truth out. The lady was guilt ridden and could not even ask her husband and her companion of many years to reconsider and see to it that it was way back in the past. The couple who almost got their fairytale ending, met during 1930’s when Antonio was posted as a Carabinieri officer to Naples. He is originally from Olbia in Sardinia.

They are filling for divorce after so many years. This might not entirely come as a shock for the family as the couple has had their shares of trouble earlier in life and there was a time when the husband left the wife and stayed with their son for few weeks. He, however, returned after few weeks and worked towards making the marriage work but this letter seems to be the last straw.

The incident shows how fragile human relationships are and can end anytime. But in spite of this no one stops hoping and it might so happen that Antonio might come around and actually reconsider his decision. He might see that although he is hurt but he is throwing away too many memories, an entire relationship for a piece of paper and a lie that has happened so many years back.
