7% increase in air passengers during Chinese Spring Festival
January 23 is less than couple of weeks away and China is gearing up for the largest festival in the world. Expecting larger number of people to visit the country this year, Chinese authorities are adding up more flights and trains to meet the rising numbers.

THE CHINESE traditional New Year, better known as the Spring Festival is the world’s largest festival in terms of people’s migration to the country. This year China's civil aviation regulator has asked domestic airlines to add 14,000 domestic flights to cater to the needs of the people. They are expecting a total raise of 7 percent people to visit the country that would make 35 million more trips for the airplane company. In the current situation around 8,000 flights are running on a daily basis that carries around 1 million passengers to the country.

The Chinese administration has already agreed to add 412 flights every week so that people can reunite with their families during the holiday season. Trains and traffic are being noted so that the people can have a safe journey. This year a total of 2.8 billion and 235 million trips are expected to be made by road and by train, respectively for the festival that will start from January 23.

Apart from the migration to China, this occasion is celebrated almost everywhere in the world where there is Chinese culture. In India, Kolkata has Tangra, which is the well known and popular Chinatown. Spring festival is celebrated there with much fanfare also. However, in the actual country, China, it is a celebration that people wait for. Large paper lanterns, lights, kites and fireworks are the attractions of the festival. For people who are not able to garner the grandeur of the festival, we can say that it is bigger than our Kumbh Mela.

The festival begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. The fifteen day festival is marked by different ceremonies each day and each ceremony has a different significance. It starts off at midnight and many people like the Buddhists do not take meat the first day so that they have a long longevity. This is followed by various other interesting ceremonies like the birthday of the dogs, shooting off firecrackers and offering prayers to their Gods. The New Year dinner is really delicious and people have chicken and fish. Red packets containing money is given to relatives in order to bring good luck.
