7, Race Course Road renamed as 7, Lok Kalyan Marg
Race Course Road in Lutyens' Delhi, where the Prime Minister of India resides, has been renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg. The decision has been welcomed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Once the notification is issued, the PM's residential address, 7, Race Course Road, will be known as 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.

The decision was taken at a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) meeting on Wednesday, which was attended by Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and BJP MP from New Delhi constituency Meenakshi Lekhi among other members. The official announcement for the same was made at a press conference after the meeting.

The proposal to change the name was moved by Lekhi, who is also a member of the NDMC. She has earlier written to the government that the current name of the road does not match with Indian culture and suggested renaming Race Course Road as Ekatma Marg in the honour of BJP ideologue Deed Dayal Upadhyay.

Commenting on the decision Meenakshi Lekhi said, "After my suggestion to rename Race Course Road as Ekatma Marg was widely reported, I got calls from people across the country. They suggested renaming it as Lok Kalyan, which means the same as Ekatma and the words are simple. But Mr Kejriwal is trying to take the credit."

Delhi CM Kejriwal had also proposed a name to RCR and that was Guru Gobind Singh Marg (the 10th Guru of Sikhs).

While addressing the press conference after the meeting he said, "He is not just a Sikh Guru but every one follows him. He was great saint.... I had proposed renaming of the road after Guru Govind Singh while Ms. Lekhi said it should be renamed Ekatma Marg. I suggested that the PM should be consulted on this and both proposals to be sent to him. But the council members decided that on the basis of suggestions received from the public, the road should be renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg," reported The Indian Express.
