ARUNACHAL PRADESH  polled the highest 70 per cent votes amongst the three states, which went to elections on Tuesday. Polling was mostly peaceful in the frontier state, which witnessed minor clashes in few constituencies.

The voting percentage is likely to increase, officials said as more figures come in from far flung and remote areas. Prominent candidates in the fray include former chief minister Gengon Apang, Kameng Dolo, Omak Apang and Mukut Mithi among others.

Meanwhile, in Maharashtra the voter turn out stood at around 48 per cent at the end of the day, election officials said. The final figure could rise as the numbers from remote areas are added up, they added.

Polling in the state remained largely peaceful, barring minor incidents of violence and two instances of firing by Maoist ultras in Gadchiroli district.

84,116 polling stations were set up in the state for the voters to exercise their franchise and chose 288 MLAs to the state assembly.

Counting of votes in both Maharashtra and Arunachal will take place on October 22.
