80 per cent cancers preventable, 90 per cent can be cured if detected early
Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York, USA, Dr Nori Dattatreyudu has said that as per as the advancements in medical science 80% of cancers can be prevented, if proper precautions are taken.

Further he added that 90% of cancers can be cured, if detected early. He urged the government and society to create awareness among the people in this direction.

The world renowned oncologist and member, Board of Trustees and Chief Scientific Advisor for Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad, said this while interacting with press during his visit to Hyderabad. 

While answering a question on affordability of cancer care, Dr. Nori explained that any cancer center that is going to come up will have to work by keeping three important aspects in its mind. First one being, quality cancer treatment and second is access to advanced technologies and finally the affordability of the treatment.

He agreed that treatment of cancer is costly but it is the responsibility of the all the stakeholders to work in the direction of balancing the same.

He also advised that people should approach integrated cancer facilities in order to get cancer treatment rather than individual doctors. Further, he advised the patients to take second and third opinion from different doctors to have clarity on the issue. Even Doctors must take extra care in explaining the details of treatment to patient, he added.

He urged the government to initiate steps to strengthen the cancer registry in the country to understand the exact number of cancer incidence. This will enable the government to work on formulating proper policies to eradicate this killer disease, he said.

Further he requested the government to provide a mechanism to share the knowledge among the institutions, hospitals etc thus enabling the patient to get best of the best treatment at affordable cost.

Finally explaining about a special program being developed by him to train the oncologists across the world, he asked doctors to utilise the same in large numbers thus giving them required insights in various aspects cancer treatment.
