96 hrs shutdown call by GJM for Gorkhaland
Gorkha Janamukti Morcha has called for a 96 hours shutdown starting from Monday (December 14) to press for its demand for Gorkhaland. GJM demanding a separate state in West Bengal is leaving no stone unearthed for its long standing demand.
BUOYED BY the Centre’s decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh into two states paving the way for new state Telangana, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) demanding a separate state for Gorkhas’ in West Bengal is leaving no stone unearthed for its long standing demand.

From Monday (December 14), GJM had called for a 96 hours shutdown to press for its demand and areas with GJM dominance in and around Darjeeling, Siliguri and other parts of the state will be affected by the call disrupting normal day to day life. Although administration had taken stringent steps to ward off any sort of unlawful activities but violence can’t be ruled out as Bimal Gurung president of the GJM and one of the prominent leaders carrying out struggle for separate statehood had said that now they are fighting for the final battle. He had also not ruled out violent protests as now for him and his supporters it is a do or die situations.

Bimal Gurung told media persons while announcing 96 hours shutdown call, “This is our last battle. We will carry out a peaceful and democratic movement to achieve our goal.” Rejecting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s statement that he gave recently on the creation of new States, Gurung said, "What Pranab babu has said is based on his political understanding. We will tell Pranab babu we don't want to resort to violence. But if the government wants to resort to violence, then they have to take responsibility for the consequences." Pranab Mukherjee had said while replying to a media query that new states will not be crafted everywhere in the country.

“Government should consider our long standing demand,” added Bimal Gurung.

On his party’s participation in tri-partite dialogue slated to take place on December 21, president of GJM said he and his party is not averse to negotiations on the issue, however, the fire brand leader told that negotiations should be centered around the creation of Gorkhaland.

Benoy Taman, another prominent leader from GJM said party has instructed all its affiliates to participate in the shutdown overwhelmingly and resort to peace but he also said except emergency services no leeway will be given to any other service.

Creation of new state is a big constitutional issue involving many aspects; however, while creating any new state government should be careful that it doesn’t send signal to people playing divisive politics and politics of vote bank.

.This is quite ridiculous. A few elements of foreign origin want to create a new state within India, our our politicians are enjoying the game. Due to the Indo-Nepal treaty of 1950, a Nepali can buy land in India, can built house in India and take up jobs in India without any problem, but this does not entitle him or her to take part in voting, thus he or she will remain as a Nepali citizen, not Indian. But these people are now creating problem and our government is just watching. We should not forget that, Nepal is now a good alley of China, so this can be a threat to the sovereignty of our mother land.
