A 10-cent comic auctioned for 523 thousand dollars in New York
A comic is a 16-page format of cheap newsprint with hand drawn images that told a story - it used to be a means of entertainment for kids when there were no TV channels. Some of them appear regularly even today as strips in newspapers. The shocking news is that a set of 345 comic books of the 1930s was sold for a staggering $3.5 million in an auction in New York.

THE COMIC book was the be-all and end-all for kids – they would exchange them and, if required, fight for them. A few of the favorite characters of the world of comics were Batman, Superman, Phantom, Flash Gordon, Mandrake, Archie, Tin-tin and Ritchie Rich and, of course, our own Indian characters of Chacha Choudhury and Amar Chitra Katha series.

Therefore, this bit of news is for those who treat comics with contempt – a set of 345 comic books of the 1930s was sold for a staggering $3.5 million in an auction in New York. Comic books can be real invaluable assets as has been proved by this recent auction of old comic books.

A Batman debut comic that cost 10-cents in 1939 was sold for $523,000. And – a Superman comic of 1938, his inaugural appearance in the world of comic books, went for $299,000. These were a part of 345 comics that had been purchased by Bully Wright from Virginia when he was a kid. Each of these comics is in brand new condition and had been lying tucked in a corner for his house in Martinsville for the last 17-years.

The stock came to see the light of day when a relative of Billy Wright was cleaning up the basement. Needless to mention, comic books are belongings that need to be treasured and the astronomical prices that these comic books have fetched has left people awestruck.
