Yet another gang-rape incident in India has rocked the nation. It was in Park Street, Kolkata on Sunday, 22 December 2013 that a 13-year-old girl was gang-raped in a moving taxi after being kidnapped from Park Street. This is not the first of its kind in Park Street. On February 2012, a women in her mid 30s was also gang-raped and assaulted in the same place.
Sunday's incident took place just two days before the city's party street ushers in Christmas. The Park Street carnival, which attracts a large number of people including foreigners, have minimal or no security. This horrifying gang-rape incident has raised serious questions about women security in the carnival.
The girl was a pavement dweller in Park Street. She used to spend her nights in a night shelter, which is run by a NGO. This incident took place when she was going back to her shelter on Sunday night at around 11pm. Anwar, the main accused, who works in an eatery close to the shelter called her from a taxi and offered her food. He then pulled her into the taxi and asked the driver to drive. The window panels were also rolled up.
The brutal assault lasted for more than four hours, where at least three persons took turns to rape her as they drove around the Park Street-Park Circus area. The girl was then dumped on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. She returned to her mother around 3:30 am on Monday and narrated the horrific incident to her.
A complain has been lodged at the Park Street police station. The police has arrested Anwar from the restaurant and are trying to arrest the taxi driver and the other accused as well. A medical examination of the girl was also conducted, which proved it to be a rape case.
