On the day of Nagpanchami villagers in India offer milk to snakes. There is another tradition on this day in a large part of UP and possibly in other parts of the country. Women, younger and older both go to temple and worship the lord. Along with other things needed in prayer, they also take a doll in their plates of worship.
Basically, by doing so the women seek apology from their brothers for mistakes they have committed.
My understanding is that historically, women were oppressed and if a woman dared to speak to some one or rebel in her family, she would have been publicly killed or humiliated by her brothers and other male folks to get back their honor.
Perhaps, this is the root cause of honor killings happenings across the country. We still celebrate the killing of our women in the name of honor. How shameful are these festivities.
I don't know any other explanation and I may be wrong but even if I am wrong, I don't understand what joy would it give to male folks to beat up the 'dolls' and 'kill' them.
