TV news clippings were sufficient to establish that the former Union Defence Minister was not at all physically fit to fulfill his responsible duty as a Parliamentarian. There should be a cut-off age for eligibility to membership of the Lok Sabha.
A FEW days back, the JD(U) decided to field an aged George Fernandes for the lone Rajya Sabha seat falling vacant from Bihar. TV footage was sufficient to establish that the former Union Defence Minister is not at all physically fit to fulfil his responsibilities as a parliamentarian.
Deputing such physically unfit persons for Parliament is a waste of the hard-earned tax-payers’ money. There should also be a rule that debars any person who lost a direct election to the Lok Sabha or State assembly, from becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha or a State assembly for the next five years in order to prevent the Rajya Sabha from becoming a dumping ground for rejected or retired politicians.
There should be a cut-off age for eligibility to membership to the houses of Parliament. Also, there should be some criterion whereby mental and physical fitness must be certified before a person is allowed to contest any election.
