THE HEAT is already on the cards as Indian democracy prepares itself for another roller coaster ride. Come this Diwali to the Hindi heartland state which is famous for its caste politics and poor condition of the general populace: Bihar. The election stunts would trigger more fireworks than the firecrackers this time!
The forthcoming election would be a multi-cornered race with the warriors of Lalu Prasad and Ram Vilas combo taking on the development mantra of Nitish Kumar, who is backed by the saffron brigade. Standing as a fortune spoiler would be Indian National Congress, thanks to the convincing justifications of Rahul Gandhi to vote for his party.
The ruling coalition led by Nitish Kumar has adopted the development plank to woo the voters. Yes, he is the same chief minister who shocked the nation with the growth figures of Bihar economy. For the year 2008 and 2009, it stood at a staggering 11.44 per cent which made Bihar the fastest growing state of India. He expanded the road coverage by 6800 kms along with construction of 1500 new bridges. He improved primary education facilities and arranged numerous drives to get children admitted into the primary schools. His government reduced the crime rate in Bihar by three fold. For a state like Bihar, these figures would sound meaningless.
The impact of these initiatives at the gross root level would be the most important factor.
The veteran Bihari babu, Lalu Prasad Yadav is the second most important player in the fray. In the national politics he is famous for his stint as Union Railway Minister, who drove railways to astonishing profits. But back at the state level he is famous for fostering the caste politics in the state and instilling ‘goondaraj’ in the state. His power as a caste leader can hardly be ignored. Add to this the support from Ram Vilas Paswan who holds good reputation amongst the dalit voters.
The spoilers turn now. Indian National Congress led by Rahul Gandhi is leaving no stone unturned to create impact amongst the voters. Weather it will eat away the vote share of incumbents or it will split the anti-establishment voting is still unclear.
Narendra Modi will feel alienated, thanks to the decision of Bharatiya Janata Party to keep Modi away from the Gujarat elections. Rahul Gandhi has turned into a neta (typical Indian politician) this election! These days he seems to be firing at the same chief minister on whom he showered praises a couple of years ago for his efforts in developing Bihar!
In a nutshell, this would be yet another routine election with high voltage speeches on morals mind boggling election stunts and of course loads of malpractices.
The perceptions of Bihar voters will be out only after the announcement of ballot fortunes of the contestants.
