Though the heavy rainfall bring great relief to people by bringing down the temperature but it also brings down many problems for the people. Water logging, potholes, lose electricity wires, traffic jams are created due to the heavy showers.
IT RAINED the whole night so also during the day, the temperature went down drastically making the winters look all the more beautiful. The sky looked so beautiful. On the ground, however, it was a different story. Water logging, potholes, lose electricity wire, traffic jams, people waking on the road with rolled trousers, etc were the scenes that can be seen on the roads. This all led to delays and fall in attendance in schools, offices, etc that result in loss of man hours. But, who bothers?
Year after year unaccountable amount of money is spent on the construction and on repairs of roads and other infrastructure meant for public. It is however, strange that the said constructions / repair works undertaken under the professional guidance of engineers and consultants don’t last even for a season. Even a small kid walking on the road is able to identify the gaps and the faulty design, eg, absence or non-functional of a drainage system, use of substandard materials, etc.
And all this at the cost of tax payers’ contribution who forced to reduce consumption of even basic consumearable items to pay mandatory tax. It is a shame that when more than seventy per cent of population is struggling to provide for two meals a day, colossal waste is allowed.
.Though Supreme Court has banned manual scavenging, some of the leading national dailies do come with
articles / pictures showing this system is still going on. Perhaps, the reason could be our sewer lay out structures
are not laid in a manner to be served with mechanical or hydralyic machines; therefore, manual scavenging has become
necessary mainly for desilting purposes before the monsoons. It is pathetic to see workers entering the sewage
bottoms without any safety devices like face mask, gloves, body mask; it is time to make it mandatory for the use
of face mask, gloves or body mask to be used by the labourers if they are going in for manual desilting or any other
work related with sewage lines. Also, the Supreme Court's order must be redefined to this extent if manual
savenging cannot be controlled or eliminated fully from the country. It is also time our Municipal corporation members
(the enlightened ones selected and elected) play important role in future planning for laying of sewer lines so that
they could be serviced through operated machines without the need for manual scavenging.
