IT IS regretted that Union Government has not yet taken any step for providing an exclusive and permanent building for Central Information Commission despite country’s most popular post-independence Act namely Right-To-Information Act being in force now in its sixth year.

The Commission has to work with several scattered buildings that too far-away in two different premises creating not only problems for those at the Commission but also for petitioners visiting Central Information Commission. Union government should take immediate steps for providing a centralised premises preferably in an exclusive building of its own so that all offices of Central Information Commission may be there in one building.

Directorate of Estates (Union Government) should formulate a system whereby there may be a permanent residence for Chief Information Commissioner like there is for Chief Justice of India. The other Central Information Commissioners should also be allotted residential accommodations in the vicinity. Similar system should be there for Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.

The Central Information Commission is the one of the most important institutions, which is spearheading the Right to Information Act in letter and spirit. It is important for the government to provide all support to the coveted organisation as it builds an institution to democratise information in this secrecy obsessed government and society.
