A rendezvous with India's second most powerful Muslim business family - Part II
Late Jenab Fakhruddin Taherbhai Khorakiwala, Ex - Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, founded Bombay Mercantile Bank with Late Tahir Mohd. Allah Baksh, ex - Sheriff of Bombay. Founder of India's first Fair Trade Practices NGO, he organized the first human chain from Colaba to Thane against Bombay's infamous riots. A senior member of Anjuman-e-Islam Bombay and Islam Gymkhana, he was a great social worker and Zakir-e-Ahlebayat who would never miss his prayers.

As a boy, he started from the streets of Calcutta by carrying cheese cartons on his shoulders. Through hard work, vision, determination and congenial cooperative nature, he turned a small shop near Bombay's Ballad Pier into Country's first Departmental Store - Akbarallys.

He purchased the famous Italian Hotel MONGINI in Bombay and converted into Akbarallys. It was 80 years back that he had conceptualized the idea of shopping malls that we find so novel today. Akbarallys is the love back-ground of Ruth Jhabawala famous novel "Heat & Dust"; Krishen Chandar desrcibed him in detail in his novel Panch Loafer as Amjad Ali.

When Begum Para left for Pakistan this man purchased the poultry farm of Nasir Khan & Begum Parah. Named Allied Poultries, it evolved new market trends in doing the poultry business in Bombay. He developed the famous marketing company Panama Marketing.

He founded Monginis Bakery which is now one of the biggest bakeries in India. Taherbhai founded Wockhardt Pharmacuticals, a national company which has purchased several international Pharmas and blended them into Wockhardt. No Indian origin company has done the research work on basic and fundamental drugs as Wockhardt has done.

He also founded Monginis Shipping Company with the boat M.V. Al Hussenie. He also established Wockhardt Digonstic Centres which are counted among the best hospitals in the world. Tahirbhai founded SWITZ Inernational, a food processing company in the Middle East. He founded Akbarllays Furniture, a famous cutting edge Art Furniture manufacturing unit. He is also the founder of Akbarallys shirtings that graduated into Double Bull.

He developed unique and largest orchards of Indian and Exotic flora in Bhivandi, Maharashtra. He started the production of GAJRA, a film with famous director M. Sadiq but had to shelve the project half way as Sadiq left for Pakistan. Last but not the least; he accepted the challenge to swim the English Channel at the age of 78.

His last achievement: Providing this citizen journalist and his family a shelter that covered his life. My sweet Boss!
