The government of India plans to have an independent policy for the food processing that helps in galvanising this sector. This was stated by union minister Subodh Kant Sahai, who also outlined the need for training farmers and other stakeholders.
The government proposes to call a meeting of the state food processing ministers after the current session of Parliament to seek the views and suggestions of the states for formulating a separate policy for the food processing sector and charting out a road map for steering and scaling up R& D in the sector.
This was announced Friday by the Minister for Food Processing Industries, Subodh Kant Sahai, at the national workshop on ‘New Perspectives in Research and Development in Food Processing Sector’ organised jointly the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and FICCI.
Sahai said the proposed policy would lay special emphasis on ‘private public partnership’ for giving a commercial orientation to the R&D efforts in the food processing sector. It would turn the spotlight on technical capacity building for research with the ultimate aim of increasing the processing of perishables from the 2007-08 level of 10 per cent to 20 per cent by 2015and raise value addition from 25 per cent to 35 per cent. The minister said, “We will pay particular attention to the training of farmers and other stakeholders. Our effort would be to train and empower 5 lakh women entrepreneurs, i.e. 1000 women from each parliamentary constituency in the country in the commercial aspects of the food processing chain. This would go a long way in increasing rural incomes and achieve all-round inclusive growth.”In his address, Dr. Amit Mitra, Secretary General, FICCI, called for launching collective endeavour in R&D. Increased dialogue between industry and the research bodies would enable commissioning of market-oriented research work. At the same time, it was also crucial to provide post-research consultancy to ensure commercialisation of the successful projects, he said.K. Rajeswara Rao, joint secretary, ministry of food processing industries, set the stage for the national workshop by spelling out the key contours of the action plan to give a thrust to the food processing sector.
