A skillful facilitator helps in improving diagnostic and problem solving processes, says Book by Schwarz
The book titled "The Skilled Facilitator: Practical Wisdom for Developing Effective Group Processes" integrates well the theory and practice of group facilitation.
The book dwells on the contextualized techniques of facilitation and explains the roles of the facilitator in improving the group processes consisting of learning, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution, and framework or boundary management.

The book, written by RM Schwarz, talks about the value of collecting valid information, shared common understanding about the processes, group owned objectives and making informed choices.

Another important facilitative process is the invention diagnosis with the following cycle, which consists these steps: observe event of activity carried out; identify inadequacies; infer; and help the group to decide how to improve.

The author holds that the problem and need-based learning is more enduring than the theory-based learning. Also, a facilitator must make himself or herself competent enough to integrate thought and action, i.e. to be able to combine thinking and doing simultaneously.

In the current scenario, groups play a critical role in empowering individuals, generating needed change, and producing innovative solutions to complex problems, suggests the author of the book. Therefore, the skilled group facilitation is an essential process toward realizing their creative and problem-solving potential.

Accordingly, the book provides essential guidelines for facilitators for group interaction with examples and practical methods for handling emotions - particularly negative emotions. The main skill is that of diagnosis for helping both facilitators and group members, identify and solve problems through facilitative leadership.

The book is useful for top and middle level functionaries as well as educators of various organizations including the educational institutions. The book, spread over 336 pages, has been published by Jossey-Bass.
