THERE ARE only a few books, which question the attitude of a world that views the differently-abled with curiosity or contempt or indifference. ‘Chandru - A sibling remembers’, by Kamala Parasuram is one such book.

It is a personal record of a woman on the life of her brother Chandru, a special child. Krishnamoorthy Srinivas, an eminent neurologist, released the book recently at a function in Chennai.

Speaking about the book, Srinivas said, “It is a personal record, as a sister recollects what happens to her disabled brother.”  At the same time, he expressed a wish to translate the book into Tamil so that it can reach a wider audience.

The book is intended to spread awareness about the needs of special children and foster tolerance and compassion towards them. It is a significant step in sensitising society to special children.

The book is published by Ahana books, a new publishing house for the promotion of women’s literature in the country. The publishing house intends to publish works for and by women on travel, humour, romance and serious literature.
