A teacher's remark creates communal tension in Jammu
People are demanding stern action against a women history lecturer of government Degree College Bhaderwah, in Jammu, after the alleged objectionable and unwelcome remarks on a particular religion in the College. The overall situation is under control.

THE ROLE of a teacher is not limited to imparting education only. A teacher has a great responsibility to make his/her students responsible citizens so that they contribute in the socio-economic development. That is why a teacher is called a ‘nation builder.’ A teacher has to keep in mind his/her role towards the society and while teaching he/she has to behave with responsibility. One wrong word taught by a teacher can spoil the entire life of students. In the present era when politics and other elements have high influence in educational institutions, a teacher has to be more cautious and responsible. Besides teaching, a teacher has the responsibility to teach peace and love not hatred but unfortunately a teacher in Bhaderwah Degree College uttered such words in a class that it has created a law and order problem for the administration, which is very unfortunate. This is an awakening call for rest of the teaching community as well as the respectable citizens and peace lovers. Such teachers must learn the ethics of teaching, before joining this noble profession.

What happened was that after Friday prayers, a peaceful protest was held today by the members of a particular community outside the Jamia Masjid in Bhaderwah, a town near Doda district in Jammu, against the administration. People were demanding stern action against a women history lecturer of government Degree College Bhaderwah after the alleged objectionable and unwelcome remarks on a particular religion in the College on Tuesday (11 Oct 2011), and this had resulted in a clash between two groups of students inside the college campus over the lecturer's alleged obnoxious remarks.

Four persons on both sides were wounded in the clash. The situation was, however, was brought under control due to timely police intervention. In this regard Deputy Commissioner Doda, Farooq Ahmad Khan ordered a magisterial probe into the incident after holding a meeting of prominent persons of both sides yesterday. He made an appeal to maintain peace and communal brotherhood in the town.

Official sources said that two sides also emphasised the need for restoration of peace in the town and demanded action against those who had created tension inside the campus, leading to communal tension. On their demand, the Deputy Commissioner ordered a magisterial probe into the alleged incident. The inquiry would be conducted by Bhaderwah SDM Shyam Vinod Meena. CDPO, Doda, Shahida Praveen would assist him. The Inquiry Officers (IO) were asked to submit report with 10 days. On the basis of findings, action under law would be taken against the accused, he added.

Today, peaceful demonstration turned into a violent clash, when SHO Bhaderwah approaches protesters to clear the road and heated arguments were exchanged between the police personnel and the protesters which resulted in stone pelting upon each other. Police fired several teargas shells to disperse the mob and tension gripped in the entire town. Protesters were shouting anti-administration slogans using load speaker of Jamia Masjid, eye witness said. Due to stone pelting 6 persons were injured including police and CRPF personnel's sources said.

When contacted, DC Doda said that after Friday prayers, people of the majority community held a protest demonstration outside the Jamia Masjid Bhaderwah and protesters tried stone pelting on police personnel but soon with the help of the prominent persons of the community the situation was controlled within no time.

People of both communities appreciated the role of DC Doda, SSP and CRPF officers for normalising the situation in the town. The Bandh was also observed in Doda, Kishtwar and other Muslim dominated areas in Jammu region. DC Doda Farook Khan and SSP Doda, Varinder Sharma are camping in Bhaderwah town since incident occurred in the college. Police and CRPF have been beefed up to deal with any situation.
