A word about New Years resolutions
It is important to realise that reflecting, getting inspired and setting goals is quite different from sustained action towards realising goals. Especially when our goals take us in a direction different from the one in which we are headed.

SOON WE will be saying goodbye to the year 2007 and the New Year will usher in.

The end of the year has always been good time to reflect, a time to look back upon the passing year and also to look forward to the New Year and the years to come. A new year means a new chance to make changes and work on various aspects of life. Some of us have had good tidings in the year about to pass, while others may not have been that fortunate.

At the onset of every year we make resolutions. Of course, there are the standard new year’s resolutions: stop drinking, drink less, eat healthier, make more money, spend less, save more, invest wiser, be nicer, spend more time on the people you love, demolish and build, start a new. This short list probably takes care of well over 90 per cent of all New Year’s resolutions. Unfortunately, most people do not get much further than that. And to make matters worse, most of our resolutions are forgotten before January has passed.

If you are a person who takes initiative and are proactive however, your list would probably be quite different. And your resolutions would probably last longer than January. Some of your resolutions may have already worked wonders and the year may have turned out to be your best year ever. Yet for others, the New Year may have been more of the same. Nothing much changed. You had some good ideas, a number of goals and the intention to do something about them, but commitments and good intentions…well!

It is critically important to realise that reflecting, getting inspired and setting goals is one thing but actually moving into sustained action is quite another. Especially when our goals take us in different direction than the one in which we are currently headed. How and why does this happen time and time again?

We are motivated people. We have set goals that we went on to achieve in the past. How come we get all fired up and excited, thinking about the opportunities before us and making the necessary changes to make it all happen for us, yet before we know it our excitement has dwindled and we are stuck in our old daily routine once again. How does this happen?

The answer again is simple. Things do indeed get in the way. We have allowed old habits to sneak back in. We have allowed people in our environment to sway or discourage us. Bottom line is: we have allowed it to happen. Wouldn’t it be safe to say that these factors will come into play when we set some new goals or decide on some new changes? Of course they will. Our peer group, our relatives, our friends, our habits and everything else remain pretty much the same. Their influence on our life does not automatically change much either just because we set some goals.

The point is that we need to become aware of the influence they have on us. Once we have done that then we can come up with ways to counter their negative effects. Some might say what about ‘the law of attraction’? We get what we focus on. We become that which we think about most of the time. Can we not make a resolution to follow the dictates of God and submit our selves to His holy will? Let us make a new resolution and work hard to keep it through out the year 2008. Happy New Year and God’s choicest blessings!
