A young potato farmer commits suicide in Bengal
A report has come in a vernacular daily from Kolkata that a farmer after growing potato committed suicide because he could not get his cost recovered.
THIS NEWS is a painful one. Farmers need to be advised to grow such items which is profitable. We have agricultural scientists who are researching on crops but are not aware of the market statistics. They are bringing out new varieties with proper calculation but quote uneconomical selling rate, resulting in the poor innocent farmer gets paid less. As such the farmers are sceptical to take up new items as scientists are not able to guarantee the selling rate.
Farmers are the back bone of our economy and as such an insurance is required to safeguard them from losses. Instead of wasting time in researching on regular items such as rice, and dhal, etc., which already have no good markets, scientists should give attention to alternative crops.
During my visit to Kalyani Agricultural University I was told that if farmers grow Segun tree (Tectona Granduis L.F) every 10 ft the quantum of teak wood they will get every year by cutting its branches will keep his family running. If there is a crop failure he can cut one tree completely and come out of debt. The tree has a long life and will last till his grand childrens. So it will feed two generations.
The scientists are having lot of remedies but are not willing to share it with the real people on the spot. As a reult, this type of disaster is taking place. Time has come for them to teach and stand by the agriculturists and see that they prosper. Else, maintainimg that seat is useless and wastage of public money.
