Here Modi did best things. He brought Dr. Harsh Vardhan as the CM candidate and started organizing the Delhi BJP unit. He worked very meticulously and single handedly made BJP the largest party in Delhi. In the 18 booths that went voting till 8.30 PM, BJP won 12 out of it. The booth management and bringing ignorant voters to polling booth reaped success for BJP. That speaks how strong Modi is in poll management apart from his oratory skill!
In Chhattisgarh, BJP was set to lose particularly in Bastar area and other tribal areas because of sympathy wave of anti-naxal hero late Mahendra Karma. BJP too lost many of the seats in those areas. However in second phase, it’s Modi’s strategy that helped BJP to compensate the loss in the rest of areas. This speaks how strong his impact is!
In MP and Rajasthan, no doubt Shivaraj Singh Chouhan and Vasundhra Raje Sindhia were capable of winning the state elections for the BJP on their own. But see the record vote percentage and seats earned in those two states! It’s all time record and because Modi’s popularity complemented to the popularity of their CM candidates. Thus if someone is refusing to accept that Modi was not a factor at all, then either they must be hard core Modi haters or might be delusional.
However, BJP in general and Modi in particular shouldn't be carried away with these results. They need to remember their blunder during 2004. Harping on state election results in 2003, BJP became over confident and went for election a year before despite Vajpayee's objection. The result is that they are no way nearer to power since almost a decade!
They can consider it a momentum, but should understand the public message too. AAP’s success proves that they have to act very carefully. They have to make their stand very clear on issues. Only hot-sots or selective choosing of issues might very well back fire.
Modi need to clarify on issues like inclusion of his party under RTI, on issues of Lokpal , Lokayuktas and all such public interest issues. Speeches of empowering people will not work. He has to give the road map to the tall claims also. People will start asking ‘how’ to ‘what’ your claim is.
Thus road ahead is not smooth. If Modi understands the public message of this election and act accordingly, then he might have a chance! Otherwise AAP or similar parties which may come in to the fray can steal the thunder! One thing must be noted, people may be rejecting UPA, but need not choose BJP if other options are available. AAP simply proved it. Therefore Modi need to learn the public mood and should learn as fast as possible!
