AASU protests against construction of mega dams in Assam
The members of All Assam Students Union hanged the effigies of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at public places. They accused that the Chief Minister has surrendered the interest of the people of the state to lobbyist of the mega dams' project.
THE EFFIGIES of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi were hanged at public places, all over Assam, by member of All Assam Students Union (AASU).
The grievance of the student body is that despite the recommendations of the expert committee, comprising experts from IIT Guwahati, Guwahati University and Dibrugarh University against the construction of the mega dams for hydel projects, which can have catastrophic effects in the lives of the people, the Chief Minister has adopted a stand in favour of such a project.
They accused that the Chief Minister has surrendered the interest of the people of the state to lobbyist of the mega dams’ project.
AASU made it clear that despite the pro-development initiative, it will never support any developmental project that proves to be a threat to the life and the very civilisation of the indigenous people of Assam.
They reiterated that what is needed is developmental projects such as the power projects but that which suits the particularly fragile ecosystem and geographical limitations of the state and criticised the inability of the Chief Minster to uphold the cause of the indigenous people of the state boldly instead became a servile follower of Delhi.
The student body said that it will stick to the demand for discarding all the mega dam projects, detrimental to the fate of the people of the region, as per the recommendations of the expert committee.
In Guwahati, members of All Guwahati Students Union (AGSU), a wing of AASU, hanged effigies of the Chief Minister in front of Ambari Assam Textile Institute, at Ulubari Chariali, Silpukhuri, in front of Bhangagarh SB Deorah College, near Gauhati University, at Bharalumukh, Chandmari, Bamunimaidam and in many other places.
