ABOUT TWO years ago, a group of ambitious students from Gujarat National Law University conceptualised a project that would bring their ideas and opinions to the fore using the medium of stagecraft. They brought the concepts of law to the masses by using theatre to educate and inform the people about the law.

This venture, started off in 2006 by students in the five year LLB programme in one of the premier National Law Schools (GNLU) of the country, has been producing plays in the last two years dealing with legal issues. These plays have gathered a tremendous reception, and today, Abhivyakti is a matchless endeavour, a singular success story.

Ishan V Vyas, the coordinator of Abhivyakti, says that this project, which began in the hostels of GNLU, Gandhinagar, has grown from the state capital of Gujarat right up to the national capital in a very short span of time. They have managed to successfully deliver their message to the masses.

It is important to note that the curriculum of National Law Universities encompass a wide range of socio-legal subjects including Company Law, Intellectual Property Rights law, International Humanitarian Law, Indian Penal Code, laws related to women etc. Abhivyakti is striving tirelessly to take these issues discussed not only within the boundaries of a classroom in the law universities and bring it within the reach of the common man. They strongly feel that these are subjects that the masses should be made aware about, so that it can lead to their enlightenment.

Co-coordinator Vivek Mishra informed that the purpose behind starting the legal theatre was to deliver the message of social justice and law to the masses and to the classes. According to the director of group, Rahul Mutha, “We have performed on issues like hacking, IPR, AIDS awareness, piracy, homosexuality in different state and national level festivals.

Abhivyakti has in its pipeline efforts towards expanding its venture by including within its ambit other prestigious National Law Universities existing at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Raipur, Jodhpur and Lucknow. Some have already started working towards delivering the message of Abhivyakti within their own states.

In this era of technology and e-governance, the group has also explored other media such as films and documentaries in order to spread their message. This is also proving to be successful, as they have already won a competition held at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, where their short film earned rave reviews.

Technical specialist and looking forward for career in cyber laws student of GNLU, Hemant Thadani said that through Internet blogs and podcasts, Abhivyakti is delivering the message of ethics and law to the companies and law firms.

Students from states of Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya pradesh, West Bengal and Punjab are associated with the group, rishabh Bharadwaj, Vineet Dave, Vikas, Shivdhan, Kushal are to name a few.

This special effort of the students of GNLU hopes that through their work, people shall begin to have a positive attitude towards statutes and laws of the nation.
