TWO SCHOOL children were killed and 30 others got injuried when a matadoor plunged into 350 feet deep gorge at Bathri on Thathri-Kilhotran road of Bhalessa in Doda district. The area is witnessing several accidents of mini buses since two years. The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK06-1588 was on its way from Thathri to Bathri when two kilometres short of its destination it plunged into Kanchi Nullah under the jurisdiction of Gandoh Police Station killing two school children on the spot and wounding 31 others.
According to district commissioner, Doda, who visited the spot soon on receiving the information about the accident said, “The mishap took place due to the negligence of the driver of the overloaded vehicle and the tragedy could not be averted in the absence of parapets on the kacha road.”
They said that instead of adhering to the motor vehicle rules, the driver of the mini-bus chose to allow 32 students of Government High School Malanoo to board the vehicle as against its seating capacity of 16 but to earn some extra bucks, he played with the lives of all the 32 students.
Before the plunging of the vehicle into gorge, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and escaped from the spot. Police has launched a hunt to nab him.
Soon after the accident, civil and police administration immediately pressed rescue teams into service and after hectic efforts, all the occupants of the ill-fated vehicle were brought out of the gorge and shifted to Community Health Centre (CHC), Thathri where two children were pronounced as brought dead.
Later, 15 of the 30 injured were shifted to District Hospital Doda for specialised treatment and their condition was stated to be out of danger when reports last came in. The condition of those undergoing treatment in CHC Thathri was also stable.
The deceased have been identified as Raziya Bano, daughter of Abdul Latief and Hasna, daughter of Abdul Karim, both the residents of Bathri.
The injured admitted in the District Hospital Doda have been identified as Shafia Bano, daughter of Nazir Ahmed, Zareena, daughter of Bashir Ahmed, Mohd Isaq, son of Abdul Karim, Rubina Bano, daughter of Mohd Hanief, Mohd Sadiq, son of Ghulab Din, Gulshan Bano, daughter of Hakim Din, Khurshida, daughter of Gul Mohd, Mudassar Hussain, son of Ali Mohd, Isaq Hussain, son of Faiz Din, Muzaffar Hussain, son of Sher Mohd, Mohd Irfan, son of Mohd Hanief, Mohd Ismail, son of Mureed Hussain, Muneera Bano, daughter of Ali Mohd, Mohd Iqbal, son of Hashim Din and Sabina Bano, daughter of Ali Mohd, all the residents of Bathri.
The injured undergoing treatment in Thathri CHC have been identified as Mir Ali, son of Noor Ali, Safoora Bano, daughter of Abdul Karim, Reshma, daughter of Hashim Din, Fatima Bano, daughter of Noor Mai, Fatima, daughter of Feroz Ahmed, Shehnaz, daughter of Mohd Ashraf, Mohd Alam, son of Mohd Din, Sumira Bano, daughter of Mohd Hanief, Gulshan Bano, daughter of Noor Mohd, Zulikha, daughter of Lal Hussain, Rumeena, daughter of Mohd Yousaf, Mohd Yousaf, son of Mohd Akbar, Yasir Hussain, son of Ali Hussain, Mubeena Bano, daughter of Abdul Latief and Shabeena, daughter Abdul Latief, all the residents of Bathri.
Local non- government organisation National Students Welfare Association (NSWA) has demanded megistrail enquiry into the accident of students in Bhalessa.
The association has submitted its memorandum to the Chief Minster Omar Abdullah for establishment of traffic check point to check the over loaded buses.
Speaking on the occasion, Sadaket Malik chairman of the NGO said that it is for more than seven times that the area became prey of accidents but till date the area has not been provided any kind of transportation by the government. He said that private Tata sumos are plying in the area but the people lack any kind of governmental support. The area is facing accute shortage of buses.
The association has demanded that more SRTC buses be deployed to the area so that students may not suffer any more. NSWA has lashed the government for its failure in preventing the area from accidents.
