ONE OF Hindi Cinema’s dynamic actors, Nirmal Pandey, who was an integral part of the middle of the road films of the 90’s passed away on February 18, due to cardiac arrest. He suffered a severe heart attack, and died on his way to Holy Spirit hospital in Andheri, Mumbai.
He was 48 and is survived by his wife and two children. A graduate of NSD, he started off on the theatre circuit and later on shot into prominence with Bandit Queen. He shot into the limelight with Shekhar Kapur's much acclaimed "Bandit Queen" (1996), in his performance as the dacoit Vikram Mallah, he wins the affections of Phoolan Devi, India's notorious woman dacoit. He even held the distinction of winning the Best Actress Award – when he won the Valenti award in 1996 for Amol Palekar’s Daayraa.
Some of his other notable movies include Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Train to Pakistan, Godmother, Hadh Kar Di Aapne etc. Nirmal Pandey initiated his Film career with the Award winning role of a transvestite in Amol Palekar's Daayraa but was later reduced to doing bit roles in Bollywood films He was a graduate from the National School of Drama and was also a part of a London based theatre group, Tara. He had participated in more than100 plays. Heer Ranjha is one of them. In addition to acting, Nirmal Pandey was also a versatile singer. He was most recently seen in a Telugu movie- Kedi. One of his last movies, Lahore, is all set for release shortly. His passing away is a loss for Indian Cinema.
