Ad-free cricket telecast on Doordarshan a welcome step
The Delhi High Court has directed the country's public-broadcaster Doordarshan to telecast interruption-free live signal of the ongoing ICC Champions Cup Trophy 2013, being held in England. This follows the appreciable statement from Prasar Bharti Chief Executive officer that Doordarshan as per its commitment for public-service will be providing advertisement-free live telecast of these cricket-matches.

Considering enormous money earned by self-termed ‘private’ Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) through sale of telecast-rights of cricket-matches earned only due to high public-craze of people, legislation may be done so that Union Ministry of sports may get telecast and broadcast rights of matches including cricket-matches played in India and/or where India is a playing team.

Even International Cricket Council (ICC) with major contribution from India’s BCCI should be pressurised to do so failing which Indian government may intervene and ask the BCCI to break up its ties with the ICC.

Practically, the ICC cannot survive without India through BCCI’s affiliation. This step will prevent huge money going in the hands of now-defamed BCCI. The money will instead go to Union Sports Ministry for developing all Indian sports so that India’s performance in Olympic games may improve.
