Admiral Mehta was in the capital to deliver an address in a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on the topic “Naval Self Reliance”. Mehta expressed his ire over the recently published report of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), wherein Indian Navy and Ministry of defence have been criticised for shelling out whopping sums of money for procuring an old warship, Admiral Gorshkov.
When asked to comment on the price India is shelling to buy the old aircraft carrier-the chief of Naval Staff, said that he could challenge anybody to procure an aircraft carrier of the size and stature of Admiral Gorshkov with less than two billion dollars.
According to Admiral Mehta the deal was finalised after working out a sophisticated strategy, which was devised by experts and senior officials from Navy and ministry of defence. Moreover, before inking one of the most costly deals ever, several tests were conducted on the aircraft carrier, added the admiral.
On future capabilities and plan of Indian Navy, Sureesh Mehta said that Indian Navy is working on an ambitious plan, which has been named as Maritime Capability Perspective Plan. Indian will be a force to reckon with in the maritime world by 2022 as per this plan, he said.
It is envisaged that the country will have a three dimensional, versatile naval force comprising 160 ships that will include three aircraft carriers, sophisticated submarines and more than 300 aircrafts. Besides, satellite and state-of-the-art centric marine surveillance and operation.
The admiral further added that the Indian Navy has also submitted a strategic proposal titled “Science and Technology Roadmap-2025”, which is aimed at developing indigenously built modern technology for naval applications.
Admiral Mehta did admit in the press conference that at times Indian Navy had faced problems in receiving quality equipment from OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) but it had never compromised on quality.
