India's latest innovation, an Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile that is competent to destroy hostile missiles encountered a coordination problem on Monday at Wheeler Island, Orissa coast.
ON MONDAY, coordination problems encountered in an Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile led to its failure in taking off. During the planned launch of the missile from the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island off Orissa coast, technical snag in the sub system occurred leading to the failure of the experiment.
"Coordinated exercise between target missile Prithvi from Chandipur and the indigenously built interceptor from Wheeler Island could not take place properly during the planned trial," defence sources said. The trial of the multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, was originally scheduled to be held yesterday from the two different sites of the ITR but had to be put off due to some technical snag in a sub-system at Wheeler Island, they said. The target missile, Prithvi was fired from a mobile launcher at 10.02 hours at Chandipur-on-Sea, but the interceptor failed to take off.
The reason the failure of the interceptor missile is yet to be known. However, it is being speculated that due to deviation by the target missile, there might have been coordination issues leading to the failure.
