Advani has been a controversial figure since he became the president of the BJP in 1986. The party floated a Hindutva agenda to gain the support of the Hindu majority. This was further strengthened by the temple demand and the Rath Yatra.
THE LAST Lok Sabha elections was a disappointment for LK Advani. The man who survived for more than six decades in Indian politics saw his vision of becoming the prime minister of the country being buried by ballot boxes forever. In spite of his failure, the man still dreams about building a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya.
Advani has been a controversial figure since he became the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1986. The party floated a Hindutva agenda to gain the support of the Hindu majority vote banks. This was further strengthened by the temple demand and the Rath Yatra.
The Rath yatra embarked on by Advani in 1989 left a trail of blood and destruction in its wake. The party claimed that a Ram temple needed to be rebuilt on the Ram-janmabhoomi, a place believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, where a centuries old mosque, Babri Masjid stood. It demanded that Babri Masjid needs to be demolished as it was a sacrilage of the holy place and built on the ruins of an temple that was razed to the ground by Islamic rulers.
In 1992, Karsevaks destroyed the mosque and this lit fire in the volatile regions of the country, with riots and brutality of the worst kind being reported. Thousands of people were killed in the aftermath of the violence. The riots in Mumbai witnessed the death of 900 people in two months. The BJP leader is often blamed for inciting communal violence in the country.
Advani’s daughter-in-law, Gauri Advani has also filed an affidavit against Advani. According to her, Advani conspired in the demolition of the mosque. She even stated that is not a Hindu and does not believe in Hinduism. These allegations however have not been proven as yet.
He also had to face a lot of flak for his comments on Jinnah. However, he played the role of a mute spectator when his colleague and friend Jaswant Singh was ousted from the party of making similar comments on the father of Pakistan.
After Vajpayee withdrew from politics, he projected Advani as the next leader of the BJP, but the latter ended up playing cheap political tactics during the recent Lok Sabha elections, by passing personal comments on the incumbent Prime minister, Manmohan Singh. It was like the last nail on the coffin.
The man lost his chance. He even withdrew for a while, contemplating retirement from politics. But then, with the ensuing pressure from his party members, Advani stayed on. Now, that he dreams again of building the Ram Temple!
