Afghanistan attack: 40 innocents killed, more than 70 wounded
At least 40 persons have been killed and dozens more were wounded late on Wednesday when a blast ripped through a wedding party where people had just sit down to take their meals in southern Afghanistan.

AT LEAST 40 persons have been killed and dozens more were wounded late on Wednesday, when a blast ripped through a wedding party where people had just sit down to take their meals in southern Afghanistan.

The blast occurred in Arghandab district of southern province of Kandahar Wednesday night. Spokesman for the provincial governor Zalmai Ayoubi said, “Right now I can say that dozens of people were killed and injured in the blast.”  A senior police official in the province said, “It was a suicide bomber that targeted the wedding party.”

He added, “According to our information 39 people were killed and 73 others were injured in the attack.” The groom and several children were among those injured.

“The suicide bomber went inside the party and blew himself up as hundreds of people were having their dinner,” said an eye witness. Another eyewitness said he thought as many as 150 to 160 people were at the wedding.

Groom's brother, Mohammad Zanif said, “There was an enormous explosion and as a result everyone there was either killed or injured.” “We don't know how many bodies remain at the site and we don't know if it was a suicide attack or a bomb or something else,” he told mediapersons.

Another official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the death toll could rise as the dead and injured were “rushed to different hospitals and a private clinic, we can not give an accurate number now.” No group took responsibility for the blast, which took place some 15 kilometres north of Kandahar city. Local television appealed to people for blood donations to help those injured.

Argandab district is on the northern border of Kandahar city - the commercial hub of the south - and provides a major route for insurgents to enter the city.
