Afzal Guru hanged in Tihar jail
Only a week ago, President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected the mercy plea of Afzal Guru. He was awarded death sentence by the court after he was convicted for the crime of the terror attack on the Indian Parliament. Today, the news of his hanging in Delhi's Tihar was aired by the media in the morning.
According to news reports, Afzal Guru was hanged at 8 a.m. today. After, his hanging, security has been tightened in Delhi
and some other towns. Afzal Guru was awarded the death sentence by the Supreme Court in 2004 but it was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition.
One may recall that nine people were killed in the parliament attack in Delhi on December 13, 2001 by the five heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists who were later shot dead by the security forces. Afzal Guru was convicted of plotting the terror attack by the court under the Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act and awarded death sentence.
Guru belonged to Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir and a student of the MBBS course who became a member of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front to receive terrorist training.
Reportedly, Guru's body will be buried within the jail campus after following the full religious rites.
