Agra-Lucknow Expressway or colossal scam way?
During SP government's rule, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav dreamt of a six-lane highway connecting Lucknow with Agra, a distance of 302 km. A very good dream indeed.

This highway was tom-tomed by the Akhilesh government in a big way as the CMs farsightedness and development-oriented mind. However, after the change of the government and Yogi Adityanath taking over the reins of power in UP from Akhilesh, the truth of this highway and the colossal corruption that consorted into the making of the project is now coming out in the open. An inquiry has been ordered and dreams of lot of bigwigs, both netas and bureaucrats, are likely to be shattered.

This highway project with a total sanctioned budget of Rs 11526.73 corers was commenced building on November 23, 2014. It required acquisition of 3400 hectares of land. Compensation for this acquisition which was distributed to the people worked out to be 2591 core rupees. And from here, starts the story of corruption.

First, the layout plan of the proposed highway was leaked to the UP-ruling Yadav clan, their near and dear ones and their henchmen. They wasted no time in buying all this land to be acquired from the farmers at very cheap prices. Thereafter, they sold the same land to the highway authority making four times the money they had spent in acquiring the land from farmers, as per the laid down rules of compensation. If this wasn't enough, the land acquired was mostly agricultural land but it was shown as urban land for further enhanced rate of compensation. One can imagine the high cost of all this scamming and wastage of hard earned money of the unsuspecting public.

Investigation has been ordered by the Yogi government and soon the truth will come out, but the money spent with exhorted cost is gone. Besides, legally no body can be accused because people involved will deny that they had prior knowledge of the alignment of the highway. Democracy or no democracy, this cannot be allowed to continue. Time has come for finding some kind of a solution to such types of corruption.
